ESTHER DE GRAAF / MICHIEL HILBRINK

HOTEL MARIA KAPEL IS A RESIDENCY WITH AN EXHIBITION SPACE IN THE CITY CENTRE OF HOORN, THE NETHERLANDS. IN RECENT YEARS, GROUPS OF ARTISTS FROM THE NETHERLANDS AND ABROAD HAVE DEVELOPED NEW PROJECTS THAT WERE EXHIBITED IN THE CHAPEL, IN HOORN, WEST FRIESLAND AND BEYOND. HOTEL MARIA KAPEL IS STRONGLY COMMITTED TO THE WORKING PROCESS OF TALENTED ARTISTS WHOSE PROJECTS THEY HAVE FACILITATED AND SUPPORTED SINCE HMK’S INCEPTION IN 2003. HMK WORKS WITH EMERGING AND MORE ESTABLISHED ARTISTS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD, PROVIDING A PLACE FOR ARTISTS TO REALISE IDEAS, REGARDLESS OF THE STAGE OF THEIR CAREERS.

ESTHER AND MICHIEL HAVE USED THE ATTIC SPACE AS A WORKING STUDIO FOR THE DURATION OF THEIR RESIDENCY, ENABLING THEM TO MAKE SITE RESPONSIVE AND INTERVENTIONAL WORKS. THOUGH THEY HAVE NOT DIRECTLY WORKED COLLABORATIVELY, BY SHARING A STUDIO ENVIRONMENT AND WORKING INTENSIVELY IN THIS SPACE TOGETHER THEY HAVE RESPONDED TO EACH OTHERS WAY OF MAKING AND DISPLAYING SCULPTURE.

ESTHER DE GRAAF (B. 1984) LIVES AND WORKS IN GRONINGEN. ESTHER GRADUATED FROM MINERVA ACADEMY OF ART. HER RECENT SCULPTURES ARE MADE OF CARDBOARD, ALUMINIUM FOIL, IRON WIRE AND CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS. BASED ON ORGANIC AND ARCHITECTURAL STRUCTURES, THE SCULPTURES EXPLICITLY REFLECT THE ACCUMULATION AND FRAGILITY OF THE CONSTRUCTION. ESTHER HAS RECENTLY EXHIBITED AT LAMOA LOS ANGELES MUSEUM OF ART.

MICHIEL HILBRINK (B.1979) LIVES AND WORKS IN AMSTERDAM. HE STUDIED FINE ART AT THE GERRIT RIETVELD ACADEMIE IN AMSTERDAM AND RECENTLY UNDERTOOK A RESIDENCY AT THE JAN VAN EYCK INSTITUTE IN MAASTRICHT. MICHIEL FOCUSES ON THE MATERIAL QUALITIES OF OBJECTS AROUND HIM. BY REMOVING MATERIALS EVERYDAY FUNCTIONALITY HE REVEALS A DIFFERENT VERSION OR USE OF A KNOWN OBJECT.

ONE THORESBY STREET ARTISTS REBECCA OUNSTEAD AND OLIVER TIRRE HAVE BEEN SELECTED TO UNDERTAKE A RESIDENCY AT HOTEL MARIA KAPEL IN JUNE 2014, RESULTING IN AN EXHIBITION RUNNING 22 JUNE – 20 JULY.
